Which Jobs Are Most at Risk from AI in 2026

Not every job faces the same exposure to AI. The roles most at risk share a common thread: high volumes of repeatable, rules-based work with clear inputs and outputs. The roles holding steady share the opposite: judgment, relationship management, and physical or situational unpredictability. Here is what the exposure actually looks like role by role.

Highest Exposure Roles

Data entry and basic bookkeeping, first-line customer support handling scripted issues, entry-level content writing and copyediting, resume screening and initial candidate sourcing, and routine scheduling and calendar coordination are among the roles seeing the fastest AI absorption. These jobs are built around a narrow, well-defined set of repeatable tasks, which is exactly the environment where current AI tools perform best.

Moderate Exposure Roles

Paralegal research, junior accounting and reconciliation work, basic graphic design, and first-draft marketing copywriting sit in the middle. AI can produce a usable first pass, but a human is still needed to catch errors, apply context, and make judgment calls the tool cannot. These roles are shifting toward review and oversight rather than disappearing outright.

Lowest Exposure Roles

Skilled trades, healthcare and caregiving roles, sales roles built on relationship trust, senior leadership and strategy roles, and any role centered on physical dexterity in unpredictable environments remain the most resistant to AI displacement. These jobs depend on things AI cannot yet replicate: physical presence, earned trust, and the ability to navigate genuinely novel situations.

Exposure to AI is not the same as elimination. A role that is 40% automatable does not lose 40% of its headcount — it changes what the remaining people spend their time doing.

What Small Business Owners Should Do With This

If your business has employees in high-exposure roles, do not wait for a crisis to start the conversation about how their day-to-day will change. Identify which parts of the role AI can absorb now, and start reallocating people toward the judgment-based work AI cannot yet reach — before the shift happens on its own terms instead of yours.
